“ | Betray...Return? Pray tell, what is this you speak of? Did I call you "king" but once? I've been waiting all this time...for you to lower your guard so I could strike. 'Tis as I said before. "My position has not changed. I serve the true king." And that king, Set...is not you. Strangely, he wears a human form at present...but I have only one king. This personage alone!! | ” |
—Anubis to Set |
Sirius (シリウス, Shiriusu), commonly referred to as Anubis (アヌビス, Anubisu) is one of the main characters of the anime Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts and Manga series. Anubis is Leonhart's most trusted adviser and manages some of the king's affairs, and gives his harsh and cynical opinion.
Appearance[]
Sirius is a jackal-like beast with entirely midnight blue fur and thin piercing yellow eyes that shows his rather shrewd nature as a retainer with years of political experience. He wears expensive and lush blue, yellow, and white robes with a key ring on his right hip, four gold ring piercings on his left ear, a gold neck ornament with a lapis blue stripe around his neck, and a white silk mask that covers his muzzle.
By the end of the series, Sirius has gained a fifth piercing on his left ear, his robe collar is now wide, and his robes now have a dark teal color.
Personality[]
Sirius is best described as harsh and strict, always discreetly insulting Sariphi and usually going out of his way to put her down and that she doesn't belong in their country due to his hatred of humans like other beasts. According to Jormungand, Sirius is known to have a sharp tongue and loyal to a fault because he sees it as necessary in order to shape Leonhart to be a strong leader. He is also impatient, shown to be easily irritated by Sariphi and later Lanteveldt.
As a royal retainer, Sirius is fiercely loyal towards the royal family to the point of disobeying Leonhart as if he feels it justifies the continuation of the royal family even setting up the trials for Sariphi despite Leonhart's protests.
History[]
Early Life[]
Sirius was born as the only child to his father, he was given a first ear piercing by his father as proof of the Anubis tradition.[2]
As a child, he grew up with high expectations from his peers as an heir to the "Anubis" lineage as the kings personal right-hand man. But he was forced to grow up without any fatherly or motherly affection as his father was always with the former king and his mother is not mentioned at all. When former Anubis died protecting the former king, he started to show a strong resentment to the royal family because they showed no remorse after his father died. He started to dedicate all is efforts to become a powerful enough person to get away from his inevitable fate as the next Anubis.[3]
He was later appointed by the late king to be a companion to Leonhart as a child. At one point he became sick because of a weak constitution as noted by maids that whispered outside his room. Expecting that no one would care for him he was ready to accept his lonesome days in his bedroom. At some time later Leonhart came into his room through the window to keep him company. Gave him food etc. But after a misunderstanding, he and Leonhart were kidnapped by rebels in order to exchange them for prisoners.
After Leonhart was injured after protecting him from an attack from one of the bandits and subsequently managed to escape and get rescued by a search party his attitude changed dramatically. He then vowed to be a loyal retainer to Leonhart even if that meant he would lose that little "Warmth" he felt from Leonhart's friendship. He then accepted his role as Anubis and thus "lost" his old name.[4]
Plot[]
Anubis introduces the 99th sacrifice from Yoana to the king. When he then looks down on the girl's rather slender frame before suggesting that they should put her on display and demand a new sacrifice, the girl retaliates by calling Anubis a dog and later sticking her tongue out at him, much to his irritation.
During the Night of Revelation,
From that day on, Leonhart announces that he plans to make Sariphi his queen instead, much to the shock of everyone including Anubis.[5]
Epilogue[]
After Richard is brought back to his lesson by Lanteveldt. Richard says that he'll rather train with Lanteveldt than study and asks if the king of beasts has to be strong which Anubis denies and tells him they no longer do it like before, Richard then asks Anubis to tell him the story of his parents before he was born and Anubis agrees and tells him not to tell his father.[6]

Quotes[]
- (to Sariphi) "You are still a mere sacrifice, alive only on the King's whim. The court's opposition is certain. And I, for one, will never acknowledge you as His Majesty's Queen. But..so long as you stand beside the King at the banquet...I will not let permit you to do anything to sully His Majesty's honor. Solely by having a human at his side...His Majesty has placed himself in weighty shackles. Mind you never forget that." (Chapter 2)
- (to Sariphi) "I assure you...it will not last. If you believe you'll always enjoy His Majesty's favor...you are very much mistaken. There are as many women as there are stars in the sky." (Chapter 5)
- (to Jormungand) "Get your hands off me! If I could extract myself from this so-called friendship, I would!" (Chapter 6)
- (to Sariphi) "Do Not touch me!...Do you suppose this put me in your debut? You're shameless. Is there anyone whose favor you won't curry to extend your life? You vulgar human wench...!! That ploy may have worked on the King...but I won't fall for it. And I won't allow His Majesty's heart to be further ensnared...by a lowly human girl who knows nothing of our ways! I...will never accept you!!" (Chapter 27)
- (to Leonhart) "Wha-What are you saying, sire? You are the ruler of this kingdom! The King of Beasts, who unifies myriad races. The lord who stand alone at the pinnacle of Beastkind-" (Chapter 76)
- (to Sariphi) "Wench...should he not have had the same human blood as you-had he been pure beastkind...would you have loved him from the start, even so?" (Chapter 84)
